07 August 2015

Remember that post about 04 April 2015? The baby bro and I went to Flap-Jacks. Ring a bell now? Okay, let's jump back to that day. (If not, read the post here and then come back.)

Later that evening, Momma and Dad joined us in Indy for dinner. We were craving something different, something new, so I hopped onto Yelp and found Mama Irma’s, a Peruvian restaurant here in Indy. Now, we’ve had Peruvian food before (so it’s not exactly new for us...) in Virginia but it's nothing like Mama Irma’s! This restaurant is a small one situated in Fountain Square that can seat around 50 people. It has a spectacular menu with decently priced items considering Mama Irma herself checks the quality of her ingredients every day before cooking them. She told my family when she came out to do her rounds that she makes sure her ingredients are as fresh as they can be as if she was back home in Peru buying from local markets.

I loved the fact that she came out to talk to her customers. When she found out that we were new to her restaurant, she advised us to come back to order items that are off the menu and are sold on particular days. She also told us that in order to get some of her personal favorites to eat and make, we should call ahead so that she can special order the ingredients. This woman, who shared the same view as us that eating fresh seafood everyday is by far better than eating hormone feed chickens—well, okay, we share the same love for fresh and never frozen seafood, is such an awesome and caring woman. It shows in her food and how she talks to her customers as if they are family.

I don’t know how she does it, but she is some superwoman running this shop while able to waltz in and out of the kitchen to talk to her customers while single-handedly preparing multiple dishes.

Onto dinner...

To wet our palates’, we ordered her classic ceviche. Growing up, my parents always made a simple ceviche whenever the ingredients were in season or when they were craving it. It was composed of some sort of seafood, vinegar, and diced red onion. Mama Irma’s Ceviche Mixto (recommended to us by her) was composed of “fresh tilapia and shrimp marinated in citrus juice and peruvian seasonings also served with potato, sweet potato, and peruvian corn.” This vibrantly colored dish is the bomb. Even my baby brother, who hardly eats seafood, helped in demolishing the generous serving!

This was soon followed by the main course. Dad got the asado con arroz, or a “Peruvian pot roast served with white rice and salad.” He said that the meat just melted in his mouth and was perfectly cooked, and I have to agree with him on that. (I stole a few bites...) It was perfectly seasoned and melt-in-your-mouth worthy.

Momma and the brother got similar dishes; Mom ordered chicharron de camarones (“deep fried shrimp served with a salad and deep fried yuca root”) while brother ordered the chicharron de pollo (same description as Momma’s just with chicken instead of shrimp.) Both were equally good, but what I liked the most from their plates was the fried yuca root!

As for me, I ordered something a little different. I got the chupe de camarones. It was a “delicious flavorful shrimp bisque with shrimp, rice, peas, potato, peruvian corn, and poached egg topped with fried fish fillets.” It was exactly as the description states minus the poached egg (I didn’t even notice it). It was rich and flavorful, creamy and filling at the same time so don’t let the small bowl fool you! It was the rice, I swear… It’s a dish I would order again but probably not when I go back since I want to try something new!

Even though we were stuffed after polishing our plates, we somehow got roped into buying some of their desserts—rare dishes for us to order. The first is a typical crème brûlée known otherwise as leche asada. Dad took one bite of it and immediately ordered a second one. The second dessert we ordered was a pineapple cake with pineapple bits mixed in and a blackberry drizzle. Both of these desserts were heavenly.

Oh, and hold on a minute! We also tried some Latin American drinks. Baby bro got the Inca Cola—basically a bubblegum flavored coca cola. He’s had it before and enjoys it! The four of us sampled the home made Chicha Morada or purple corn soda. It was certainly interesting, a taste to get used to but refreshing to have after everything we ate. It wasn't for us at the time, but I'm sure the more we go and continue to sample it, the more we'll come to like it.

I hope you guys enjoyed the pictures and will drop in to Mama Irma’s in the near future if ever you’re in Fountain Square. Parking is on the street, but that’s fine because there are a ton of interesting places to pass by when walking to the restaurant.

See ya!

31 July 2015

This is an extremely overdue post. All of the food featured was eaten on April 4, 2015. Yes. You read that right. April 4th of this year. It’s July...almost August.

Better late than never, I suppose! And I haven’t done a Foodie Friday post in a while, so why not? Especially since I can still remember quite a bit of what happened from the day these photos were taken.

On April 4 of this year, the baby brother and I went to a local establishment called Flap-Jacks. It’s down the street from where I live, so I wonder why we never walk there because we always drive. The weather was perfect for walking that day, too! But when you have business to do in another part of the city, taking your car is the best option (which was the case for us).

The baby brother ordered his classic 2x2x2 which equates to two pancakes, two eggs, and two pieces of bacon or sausage links. Considering how large the pancakes are, it makes sense that he always orders this.

Bro and his 2x2x2
On the other hand, it makes no sense for me to order what I ordered, but I wanted one of their skillets so I ordered the veggie one with a side of their seriously delicious and not overly sweet pancakes. Just how I like them! But I would trade it for IHOP if only they weren’t a 15 minute drive away and an extremely long wait on top of that. As far as local establishments go, this is the place as to seeing it’s the closest and the only one I've been to so far.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and that they made your mouths water! Keep a tab up and hit refresh on the homepage to see when I talk about the extremely delicious Mama Irma’s restaurant!

See ya!
22 June 2015

Well, by now it would be belated since I didn't get the post out the day of her birthday. Nonetheless, I greeted her the day of--especially since she's TWO DAYS after mine! And we're the same age! Talk about exciting! Unfortunately, we didn't go out for our birthdays: I was too tired and without gas in my car to head out. Lately, I've been suffering from nightmares but that's a story for another time. (At least until I remember what's been causing me to wake up feeling like I'm suffocating. Don't be alarmed though! I'm fine. Believe me.)

Anyways, Lena made some not-too-sweet (which is perfect by me!) red velvet brownie cupcakes with icing that hit the sweet spot for me that the girls from my bio class and I enjoyed before lecture. You'll see more of them later when I kick my butt into action to write these posts. Sorry, guys, for being so lazy.

I hope you enjoy Michella's birthday outfit pictures. Sorry that they're terrible--I'm truly out of practise both for taking photos and editing. BUT she's gorgeous! Enjoy! ^__^

Happy birthday, Michella! To recreate her outfit, follow the guide below. ^__^

31 May 2015

Hello, again!

And I'm back with yet another post--wow, I'm on a roll! I guess? Nah, I already had footage ready...

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed my previous post and are looking forward to the next video in the short series. It'll be coming out later this year, so brace yourselves for some more vlogs! Hopefully I'll be able to get some pretty good footage over the next couple of months to share with you guys. I'm so excited! ^_^

As for this next video, it highlights the activities Trinh, Jasmine, and I did on our day out since Jasmine left for an internship in New York. Before that video, though, is a short rant I had about the Nestlé Toll House cookies from Target that were a major let down. Raise your hands if you know what I mean. Don't waste your dollar on the three pack! Just get the frozen pack and make them at home. Use that dollar well. Better yet, make some from scratch. There are plenty of recipes out there if you don't have a hand-me-down one in your family.

To help you guys follow along with where we went here in the Midwest, I've made a little outline for you.

When you get the whole theatre to you and your lovelies...

First we had lunch at City Market on Market St. Trinh and I both got the Fried Egg BLT sandwiches from Circle City Soups. I added a plentiful half order of pommes frites (French fries) with Sriracha aioli sauce. And as for Jasmine? She got a cheese pizza that she says is exactly New York style (I trust her judgement since she's from there!) from Mauricio's Pizzeria. No drinks since we kind of forget about them!

When you get the whole theatre to you and your lovelies...

For dessert we wandered back to Chocolate for the Spirit. Oh! Don't think we started off with lunch first. Being it Wacky Wednesday, as told to us by the lovely lady behind the counter, we started off with samples of gelato and sorbetto before deciding on what we were eating for lunch! Trinh ventured away from her standard flavours by getting mango and raspberry sorbettos As said by Trinh, Jasmine got her "basic" flavours--chocolate and vanilla gelato. Me, on the other hand, got tiramisu and toasted coconut almond fudge. (The gelato and sorbetto is made by an Italian family residing in Michigan. You can find them at their site: Palazzolo's Artisan Gelato & Sorbetto.)

We walked back to Circle Centre Mall where we parked to catch the showing of The Age of Adaline. Reaction post will follow!!

When you get the whole theatre to you and your lovelies...

I hope you guys enjoy the video and visit the places I highlighted in the future! See ya soon!

And before I forget: We had the theater to ourselves for about 15 minutes before a group of elderly ladies came in. I hope we didn't disturb them too much with our science talk in the background...

Love always,

SamiJoie

And the video!

29 May 2015

Hello, everyone!

Well, I'm officially going to drop the jojo-bun name because I feel weird about assigning you guys one...unless you guys enjoy it. And if you don't, that's okay--but that's not the point of this post!

The point of this post is for me to announce my latest upload which is a music video that is the product of many late night talks with the lovely Trinh. She presented me with an idea for a music video for f(x)'s song "Goodbye, Summer" featuring EXO's DO since one doesn't exist at present--except for ones made using clips from Asian dramas. I took her idea and tacked on another detail: let's make it a fashion music video. Cool, huh? So we spent a few nights planning it out, contacted a few people to be a part of it, and started filming when the weather was okay.

Why?

Because the Midwest is notoriously known (especially Indiana--I can say this from experience) for experiencing four seasons in one day.

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy the video! There is a part two that will becoming out later this year along with a bloopers and outtakes reel and the actual fashion video.
04 April 2015

Fear not, Jojo-buns, because I'm not actually drinking weeds...

Well, not the one that you're thinking of!

I drank some tea made with a weed familiar to everyone's gardens: Dandelion! (Well, to be honest, I drank dandelion root tea.) This tea was sent to me by Kiss Me, Organics to be reviewed in exchange for five boxes with 20 bags each. 100 bags of tea. :0

Based on their Amazon page for their Dandelion Root Tea, this tea detoxes the liver and kidneys from toxins overall helping with digestion and, well, your internal health! Their tea is made from organic ingredients and is very vitamin rich.

Two other ingredients that are not mentioned in the title are hibiscus and cinnamon. They both help to add more flavour to the tea itself, BUT what you didn't know is that hibiscus flower when consumed can help with blood pressure. Honestly, I didn't know that until I read the box. I did however know that cinnamon can help with blood sugar regulation and reduce bad cholesterol. I love placing a stick of cinnamon in my green tea on a cold and dreary day just to warm it up a little bit more. Does anyone else do that or is it just me? It doesn't necessarily have to be green tea... Just tea in general!

Anyways, watch the video for my opinion on the tea! Something that I didn't mention is that it kind of reminded me of chrysanthemum tea even though the flavour profile is different.

Enjoy and comment on what you think!

See ya later, Jojo-buns!

01 April 2015

Hello, jojoloves!

Sorry, I’m test driving that nickname. It’s a combination of my nickname growing up (one of many) and loves since I love to call people that!

Now that I think about it, why don’t I call you guys my jojo-buns? ^_^ Either or, huh?

Tossing that aside, let’s get down to business. Recently I joined the site BrandBacker.com—a site that connects bloggers and bloggers to companies that want people to give quality reviews on their products. That said, this is a sponsored post. In this post I’ll be talking about the wonderful Radha Beauty Intensive Youth Eye Gel along with two other products that were sent to me along with it since these two products, when used in conjunction, offered the best results.

Let’s bear in mind that I am in no way, shape or form, a qualified dermatologist, but I do have some knowledge on some of the ingredients used in all three of the products.

First things first: I have bad undereye circles. They’re pretty much set in stone hard to cover unless I have a heavy duty concealer that breaks the bank. Yes, I have some concealers like that. Unfortunately for me, I have a hard time applying concealer. I have a tendency to pile too much under my eyes causing my eyes to look even worse.

That’s how bad my eyes are. It’s to the point that I’m labelled the panda in my group. *sigh*

When I received the eye gel and read the ingredients, I was mildly ecstatic. Mildly because I knew that the darkness of my undereyes wouldn’t go away, but at least other factors of it could be helped. According to the site, the gel will help your eyes by
  • Eliminating Dark circles, Puffiness, Dryness and Sagging around the eyes.
  • Increasing elasticity and plumps the skin around eyes.
  • Providing a youthful texture around the eyes.
  • Moisturizing the delicate eye area to prevent premature aging.
  • Useful for the entire face. Can be applied all over the face for an enhanced glow and a more radiant looking face.

That’s one hefty list for such a small bottle to live up to, wouldn’t you say?

The effects of the gel are due to plant stem cells, Matrixyl 3000 (firms and tightens skin around eyes), aloe, cucumber, vitamin E, and rosehip oil, and hyaluronic acid. All of these help to nourish and moisturize the skin under the eye. (The stem cells help with aging effects.) All of these ingredients combined form a lovely white gel that you can swipe under your eyes as well as any other parts of your face—which I learned recently. ^_^

After using it for a month, I have noticed that the area under my eyes is plump and no longer looking deflated and dehydrated. The texture of the skin there is smoother than it has been in years. The dark circles still exist since I hardly get any sleep, but overall the product delivered (since I was expecting that my dark circles wouldn’t go away)! I’m starting to use it on my forehead to see if it helps any since it can be applied elsewhere.

Before we proceed, here’s something worth noting: I was suffering from some serious acne for a few months that was caused by the Tea Tree Oil Acne set from The Body Shop. I had HUGE pimples scattered all over my face—some as large as a quarter—that were sometimes painful. When I was given the opportunity to get the following two products for free, I jumped on it because I was desperate to get out of my current situation.

That said...

Next up on deck is the Vitamin C serum!

Ah, what can I say about this serum? Well…

IT’S FREAKING AWESOME! I love it! It delivered on everything it promised. Well, at least for me. The site says that it...

• Stimulates the production of collagen which makes your skin more vibrant, firm and youthful.• Contains Antioxidants that will greatly reduce skin damage caused by the sun, pollution and impurities in the air.• Enhances your skins rate of exfoliation for a smoother, brighter and more radiant complexion.• Greatly Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles• Has a high percentage of Hyaluronic Acid which Deeply moisturizes the skin to reduce skin problems that occur due to age.”

Considering I’m still a tad too young to have any noticeable wrinkles except for maybe around the eyes, I cannot provide any feedback on that part of Radha’s claim, however the serum DID reduce any skin damage I had—especially all of my acne scars. My skin is finally going back to normal because of this puppy!

Or is it because of the Retinol moisturizer? Oh, this bad boy made my t-zone super oily, but boy did it help with the acne! It softened my enlarged pores and helped with my skin texture and tone as well.
Overall, I loved all three products and would definitely recommend them to other people!

Pictures, because we all love them.
