On Tuesday, I dropped in to Goodwill to search for some colourful Christmas lights for a photoshoot I did with a friend last Friday (02/02). Normally, I'm able to head straight to where I need to go -- when it's a supermarket with a familiar layout. All of the Goodwills in Indy have different layouts, so it is extremely easy for me to get distracted.

(You, thrift stores, you! I see you.)

It doesn't help that the one I went to on Tuesday, this particular location placed the jeans right smack dab in front of the door.

(Glares.)

Well, I obviously walked straight into the jeans section to see if they had a pair of the coveted mom jeans in my size.

Before we continue, I feel like I have to mention this: I've already tried a pair of mom jeans in my size, and they don't freaking fit at all. So for this trip, I decided to go up a size. I found a pair a size up from what I normally wear and thought, "Hmm, maybe this'll work." Hopped into the dressing room happy that I found a decent pair and slipped into them.

Do you think these fit?

They look like they fit, right? *laughs* They do not fit. That top is hiding the extreme muffin top that I got from squeezing into this quality pair of jeans that I had the hardest time letting go. It fit everywhere else except for around my stomach. These jeans amazed me because even though they were a size larger, they fit like a pair of jeans two sizes below mine.

Those jeans were a major confidence killer for me. I spent the night looking at how to lose the weight around my midsection (even though I already know how) along with looking into where plus size girls like myself thrift a pair of mom jeans. Let me just tell you that it was a major miss. Also, there were some Facebook comments where people said something along the lines of, "Why don't you save money and lose weight?" These types of comments were disgusting to come across, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't glance down at my tummy every now and then.

Despite being low in spirits about finding a pair of mom jeans, I tried again today on First Saturday Goodwill where everything is half off. I found a pair of jeans that were two sizes bigger than me, slipped into them and they fitted. Did they fit well? NO. A large resounding NO. They were loose in the midsection and lacked any definition everywhere else.

Sighs.

I have lost all hope of finding a pair of mom jeans at the thrift store as a plus size gal. Maybe it's a good thing I'm jump starting my diet and exercise regimen again.

Speaking of which, if you're on Tumblr, definitely check out my food journal where I keep track of what I eat in a day. I'm hoping this will help me make better decisions about what I eat. Check it out here.

To all of my plus size gals out there, do you have any pointers/tips on how to thrift mom jeans?

Till next time,
s.j.

Searching for the elusive mom jeans in the thrift store as a plus size gal

Hello, lovelies!

Did anyone notice the subtle change to my web address? I've finally embraced hellosamichan after a long debate over a few years if I really wanted to change back to it. Once I started getting into my groove on YouTube, I finally welcomed the username that I had created for myself back in middle school with open arms and an open heart.

Was it because it had "hello" in it? (Cue the Adele/Lionel Richie covers...)
Was it because it sounded happy?
Was it because it sounded silly so it made you giggle--possibly?

The answer to all of those questions is a resounding yes.

So I changed my url back to my original one and launched a brand new series on my YouTube channel called Fashionably Moody! I'll publish a new video in the coming days as to why I started this new series, but, for now, you can watch the first episode below. This was an awesome collaboration with the wonderfully talented Lois Lee (YouTube) who did a beautiful acoustic cover of Zion T's "Eat."

Please stay tuned for more of my future projects! Also, I should have a review soon...ish.

Almost three weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Tia in our Spanish class during the one of the conversation exercises. Now, do I remember most of our meeting? No. (I'm sorry, Tia, if you're reading this!) However, I do remember her awesome sense of style that's perfect for the fall season that is beginning to take over. Check out her chic and cozy outfit below!

Her makeup is so on point.

I'm not going to lie: I fell in love with her whole outfit from the the crew neck blouse, to the distressed high waisted jeans down to her boots! I seriously squee-ed over her boots and asked where she got them. She told me she got them for a steal at Charlotte Russe where they were having a shoe sale. (I just checked on the site, and they're still up for sale in BLACK for $23!!)

You can mimic the outfit using pieces I found online below. I chose a poncho instead of a normal cardigan since it is fall and sometimes you need to cover your ears from the autumn breeze.

Well, by now it would be belated since I didn't get the post out the day of her birthday. Nonetheless, I greeted her the day of--especially since she's TWO DAYS after mine! And we're the same age! Talk about exciting! Unfortunately, we didn't go out for our birthdays: I was too tired and without gas in my car to head out. Lately, I've been suffering from nightmares but that's a story for another time. (At least until I remember what's been causing me to wake up feeling like I'm suffocating. Don't be alarmed though! I'm fine. Believe me.)

Anyways, Lena made some not-too-sweet (which is perfect by me!) red velvet brownie cupcakes with icing that hit the sweet spot for me that the girls from my bio class and I enjoyed before lecture. You'll see more of them later when I kick my butt into action to write these posts. Sorry, guys, for being so lazy.

I hope you enjoy Michella's birthday outfit pictures. Sorry that they're terrible--I'm truly out of practise both for taking photos and editing. BUT she's gorgeous! Enjoy! ^__^

Happy birthday, Michella! To recreate her outfit, follow the guide below. ^__^

Hello, everyone!

Well, I'm officially going to drop the jojo-bun name because I feel weird about assigning you guys one...unless you guys enjoy it. And if you don't, that's okay--but that's not the point of this post!

The point of this post is for me to announce my latest upload which is a music video that is the product of many late night talks with the lovely Trinh. She presented me with an idea for a music video for f(x)'s song "Goodbye, Summer" featuring EXO's DO since one doesn't exist at present--except for ones made using clips from Asian dramas. I took her idea and tacked on another detail: let's make it a fashion music video. Cool, huh? So we spent a few nights planning it out, contacted a few people to be a part of it, and started filming when the weather was okay.

Why?

Because the Midwest is notoriously known (especially Indiana--I can say this from experience) for experiencing four seasons in one day.

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy the video! There is a part two that will becoming out later this year along with a bloopers and outtakes reel and the actual fashion video.

Goodbye, Summer [MV]

Lovelies!

How are you? I thought I would start off my evening with a Flashback Friday...to YESTERDAY! Yes, today I will be covering yesterday's outfit of the day that transformed easily into an outfit for church.

Now, here's a little background about my style when it comes to dressing for church:

  1. If it's a Thursday, I want as much as possible that whatever I'm wearing in the day to be appropriate for when I go to church at night. It cuts down on the time I spend trying to decide on what to wear--especially since my classes finish during rush hour.
  2. I have a TON of blue and black in my closet, so don't be surprised if you see a lot of those two colours.
  3. I normally don't add accessories. As an organist I like to keep everything simple so nothing acciddentally hits a key. BUT...
  4. It's like I'm laughing at some secret joke.
  5. ...this is an exception.

So starting with my jumper/sweater (depends on where you're from)...it is a sheer, almost metallic-y silver one that was made by Avec. I covered up underneath with a pink cami, paired that with jeans and threw on my white slim Chucks [link to similar]. For a final touch, I added the black jewelled bow ring. Isn't it cute? It makes me think of that trick when you need to remember something. (Thankfully I didn't have to remember anything except for getting to class on time and how.) Anywho--I traversed around campus to my only morning class in this comfy outfit, however, during my morning class it turned cold and started raining so this outfit wasn't exactly ideal until the afternoon.

Ugh. Midwest. You gotta love her bi-polar weather.

NOT.

Never in a million years will I ever. I mean, it's so hard to dress for four seasons in one go! You have to have a pair of shorts with some leggings, a pair of rain boots with heavy duty socks, a tank top, an oversized sweater, a winter coat, umbrella, and a scarf and mittens. And a pair of flip flops or rollable flats tucked inside your backpack or purse--whatever floats your boat.

That may or may not be an exaggeration, but this is coming from 20 years of experience.

Just saying.

Anyways. Later on, when I was getting ready for church, I removed the jeans, added a black flare skirt (old) and added a sequined collar necklace in silver and black flats. I've had this necklace for a while and never did I think I would use it until last night. I didn't know what to pair it with in the past until yesterday! You guys have no idea how happy it made me last night when I saw that it looked perfect with the jumper. The last picture is only a scratch on the surface of my excitement.

It looks like a real collar but all of us know it isn't! ^_^
I hope you guys enjoyed my post! I've gotta study since I have a big day tomorrow with Nour and barely anytime to do any of this shiz on Sunday.

Ciao, bellas!

xoxo SamiJoie

Make sure YOU are the one wearing the clothes and the CLOTHES aren’t wearing you.

Really, make sure you look GREAT in the clothing—they were made to make you look awesome and not the other way around.

Rule no. 1 when it comes to clothes shopping/cleaning your closet...

Hello, lovelies!
I’m back…briefly because I am tired and travelling home at present. I thought I would do a post in the meantime, though, on

WHAT’S IN MY MAKE-UP BAG?

Summer Loving--I mean WEDDINGS!

24 February 2014

Oh, hello, lovelies!
I’m back with, yet another, vlog post. Exciting, huh? No? Yes? Hahahaha! Anyways…
This vlog post is a bit of a departure from my other videos (despite my alluding to doing something like this type of video) only because it deals with makeup. I know, I know—I hinted at doing makeup tutorials on my Instagram or in a video (I think…don’t hold me to that!), but I’m not artistically creative when it comes to makeup. To be honest, I didn’t understand the importance of having proper eyebrows—yes, proper eyebrows—until quite recently.
Okay, I must stop there. Spotlight off of me and onto my bestie, Cori! When she visited me last month, January, we had some time to play before she left. So, what do two girls do on a Saturday?
Well, we went started the morning off watching August: Osage County to see the beautiful cast and how the story unfolded…and, the ever beautiful Benedict Cumberbatch—but, honestly, we went there for the all-star cast. Ah! Yes, and to see Abigail Breslin. My God, she is the same age as my brother and she has grown up to be a beautiful young lady. I can’t wait to see more from her! (Can we get her in a movie with Chloë Grace Moretz? I don’t want Hollywood to produce some fluffy teen movie—I want an action film! Or suspense. Or both? They would be brilliant together! In my opinion….)
After the movie and a bit of a discussion in the car, we found ourselves in the northern part of Indianapolis at Johnny Rockets. We were hoping to spend some time at the Fashion Mall, but a little bit of an emergency cropped up at home. But, before we did that…we hit the Castleton Square Mall. At the mall, we did some shopping—Cori more than me only because if I had, we wouldn’t have left the place in time for her bus. (I’m terribly indecisive.) Cori bought this awesome set of makeup for under $100 because everything was on sale to make room for the spring season! She got some stuff from both Sephora and Icing, and I have yet to talk to her about them. I hope they’re as awesome as they were when we unraveled them in the video!
Anyways, here’s the list! I checked back at Icing and Sephora recently: The Sephora + Pantone items are still in the sale section, however, I am almost positive that the buy one get one ½ off sale is over. Yay but a tad poopy. (Hahahahahahaha!!) Icing is still having their BOGO sale on make-up. Just throwing that in there.
The List:
  • Icing Expert Compact Kabuki Brush
  • Icing Mattifying Face Powder
  • 2 Way Wet & Dry Foundation
  • Icing Expert “Nearly Nude” Eyeshadow Palette
  • Sephora+Pantone Universe nail polish in Waterfall
  • Sephora+Pantone Universe Precious Metal Mousse Shadow in Gold
  • Sephora+Pantone Universe Emerald Green Eye Liner (2013 Colour of the Year)
  • Tangerine Ink Lip Gloss (08) – not a sale item!
  • Blinc Mascara Amplified in black – not a sale item!
Pretty much everything was under $10 with the exception of about three items, but her haul was spectacular! Especially her catch with the Urban Decay Naked palette dupe!
Anyways, happy shopping to everyone who decides to venture out! Hopefully I’ll be able to get some reviews for her if anyone wants some!
Love,
SamiJo

P.S.
I'll be back with a few shots from our lunch the day she came as well as a blooper reel from the video shoot! <3

Happy New Year!

Sorry that it’s late. I’ve been busy being sick with a fever and prepping the blog for it’s new re-opening! I’ve finally decided on what I am doing with this thing: It’s going to focus on fashion (and whatever falls under it), my life and my adventures, and cooking! Hahahaha!! Maybe some other things, but this is the main focus until I get a firm foundation for this site which has been in the works for a number of years considering I couldn’t make up my mind. But, now that I have made it up, I plan to stick to it by posting at least every two weeks since every week doesn’t seem to work for me.

So, this being the first post and all, let’s tackle Sunday’s outfit and use that as my first fashion post! Is anyone excited, or is it just me?

image
This is what I wore to church Sunday (the 12th). Nothing fancy… I guess? I’ve seen people wear fancier articles of clothing to church than this. I guess I’m just the type for simple things that have a little BAM! to them. (Just a little.) My outfit yesterday consisted of…
  • A white sweater with a two-tone, beaded collar (it can come off!) by nicole by Nicole Miller,
  • a snakeskin print pencil skirt by Worthington,
  • and brown tights by hue. I LOVE COLOURED TIGHTS! <3
I wore just a plain pair of black flats with a bow on them since they were the only neutral coloured pair of flats that I had. Accessory wise, I didn’t do much since the collar had more bling than I would usually wear! I kept everything natural and simple—including my hair even though my first thought Sunday morning (cue Maroon 5) was to curl it. I’m glad I kept it straight so that the drama would be kept on the collar, however, waves certainly would have made it fun and cute!
image

See what I mean? This collar has some serious bling on it. I love how it can be taken off so you have a normal white sweater (is it called “jumper” in the UK? I’ve been wondering that for a while now…). It’s a soft, comfy, and fashionably flexible sweater that I may or may not have plucked from my mum’s closet… ^o^ It was $44 at the time it was purchased, but I think it’s now down to $29.97? If you click the link in the list, I think that’s what it’s price is now. Mum got it at the retail price since it was the last and only one in her size that was found.
Hey, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do when you have a size that can be hard to find at times!

image

Here you can see the detail in the skirt. Normally, I’m not one for snake skin print or snake skin anything in fashion because, for some odd reason, it makes my skin crawl. But, at a clearance price of $1.97 (yes, two dollars), I wasn’t going to pass it up! For us curvy girls and plus size as well, a pencil skirt is a go-to skirt for us since it can accentuate what we’ve got. A $2 pencil skirt with a nice, somewhat mettalic bronze (you can’t tell in the photo, though) pattern on it was definitely a steal—so much so that Mummy dearest already had one in her closet. (We wore our skirts the same day. I get that I’m 20-soon-to-be-21, but it’s fun to match with a loved one…so long as it’s not the whole outfit? The whole outfit is cute when you’re a kid, but when you’re older it feels somewhat odd since you’re trying to find your own sense of fashion. I feel that that’s safe to say, don’t you?

Well, that’s it for now, everyone! I hope you enjoyed  my wee fashion post—most especially, my first post of the new year and new blog. Hopefully, I’ll have more and more to come extremely soon. I might be jinxing myself, but I’m determined to keep this up.

What did you guys think? Comment, like, reblog—keep in touch with me! Also, check out my twitter! Sorry, I just had to make a shameless plug… (Oh, and look me up on Instagram: LoveSamiJo SamiJoie. Or on YouTube: HelloSamiChan SamiJoieUnwrapped.)
