21 November 2014

Okay, okay, okay: Look, I know it's Friday and my family and I went out to this restaurant last Saturday--but bear with me.

It's not that tragic, right? Hahaha! I'm just trying to be playful--trying.

(Is it working? :P)

Moving on...

It was late last Saturday when Mom finally got up to Indy. Dad and the little bro came up earlier because Dad had some business to do. Once we were all together we had that one problem that always seems to rattle everyone: What do we eat? I reluctantly hopped onto Yelp because no one wanted to look up something to eat. Don't think that we don't know where to eat; we actually know of a number of places to go to, but it was late and we didn't want to go to the nearest burger joint for dinner.

Scrolling through the list of restaurants that were open until about 11pm, I came upon Rook. I remembered hearing about it from Mom who told me that a number of Filipinos from the hometown showing interest in it. Actually, they were in Indy driving around trying to find out but they never did or could? Something like that. But they were talking about it and Momma heard it.

Fortunately we didn't get lost because they have me! The gal who travels around Indy when she's bored.

Or craving.

Or intentionally gets lost.

Why on earth would I do that? Well, that's a story for another time. ;P

So we find Rook in Fletcher Place. It's a small restaurant attached to a what looked like an office space. The interior, once inside, is said to match that of an "Asian street market" with a mural composed of Asian images. If we were to take a moment to talk about the brush stroke, it's similar to that of what you would see in old Chinese or Japanese paintings.

I'm so in love with the lights!
There's a lovely string of lights overhead that reminds me of the markets back home--yes, I mean Asia. The lights connect to telephone poles that go across the ceiling, bringing back memories of a Filipino movie series that I used to watch as a kid called Home Along Da Riles. Ah, Sir Dolphy...

See the telephone line? ^_^
It's a small space, and I've read on Yelp that some people didn't like how noisy it can get in there even if there are only two groups in the restaurant. That made me giggle. The shop is meant to mimic back home and back home street shops are noisy, crowded, and small. If you want space, pay the extra dollar to go to an upscale restaurant where you would pay more money for the same food you could get for less at a street vendor.

That said, the place was small with a lot of shared space among the tables. Dad was a little surprised at that when we walked in but didn't care about it once we sat down near the kitchen/register. He and Mom understood the idea behind it after taking a brief look around. Dad had a good chuckle from it!

So, with that long introduction under my belt, let's get to the food! Ah~now I'm hungry.

Small portion of their simple menu
I liked the simplicity of the menu. No frills, no confusion. It made it easier on our half-asleep, half-I'm-going-to-kill-someone-because-I'm-so-hungry minds. We kept our drinks simple: Dad and the bro on H2O, Mom on sweet tea, and I ventured out to try the La Croix Coconut Sparkling Water. I'll keep my comments on it until after I talk about the food.

Let's begin with Dad's meal because it only seems right--c'mon, head of the family and all? :D

Rook's duck adobo
Dad was going to get a banh mi, but Jae (my baby bro) got it. There were two flavours, so I'm wondering why Dad didn't order the other...? Anyways. He got the duck adobo. According to their menu, it's duck cooked adobo style with baby kale, roasted kabocha squash, cipollini onions, and fried egg served on top of a local bakery's toasted bread. Dad added the sriracha to one, play around with his food artistically and two, add some spice because we like it hot.

For the most part, the three of us (Jae excluded) spoke in Tagalog (I spoke in a broken form since it's been years since I last spoke) when we were there, so I'm doing some translations from what I can remember...

Dad's comments on his duck adobo:
It tastes fine but it's a little [what he means here is that it was really] salty. The chef needs to remember that duck easily absorbs all of the flavours easily.
Overall, he liked it knowing full well that whatever was served at the restaurant was an Asian fusion.

As for Momma hen...well, let's just say her eyes popped a bit when she saw her tortang eggplant.

Rook's tortang eggplant
Mom loves eggplant omelet--or eggplant dipped in egg and then cooked. She loves making it at home in grand batches, so not just one or three eggplants, try about six or seven. (Yeah, yeah, that's a grand batch in my case.) For a family of four, that's quite a bit, especially when only about two or three of us will eat it. It lasts us quite a bit.

Back to the food: When Mom got her order, her eyes widened when she realised that was it for her order. She seriously asked where her ulam was--or Tagalog for main dish. We tend to use ulam and kanin (rice) interchangeably, so what she meant here was rice since it's the traditional staple in our diet. When no rice came (we didn't bother asking, either), she went ahead and tried it. She enjoyed the simple flavour and that it was a little spicy from the sriracha kewpie. The orange cubes were pickled sweet potato and the accompanying brown sauce hoisin. I didn't try, but she said it was good--even with the spicy element since she doesn't like spicy.

Rook's raven banh mi
Jae ordered the banh mi raven style. There were two versions with two different proteins: raven style was a banh mi made with bulgogi (Korean marinated beef) while the rainbird style was tandoori-spiced tofu. The bread came from the same local bakery as Dad's toast. Jae had no comment; he just devoured the sandwich and licked his fingers. Because he ate it just like that, our picky eater, it's safe to say that it was good!

Rook's pig face hash
And now my dish... Okay. So I ordered the pig face hash knowing full well that it would be a little salty from the pork cracklings or chicharon. I was thankful my dish came with rice and surprised that the little red rings were spicy, pickled peppers! I thought they were going to be sweet peppers but they were spicy. Either way, a pleasant surprise they were!

With my first spoonful in my mouth, my taste buds were instantly set off: I told Mom that it was maalat (ma-ah-laht, or salty). It was very salty. I liked the taste of everything together, but it was so salty! I soldiered through the dish and finished it.

We finished our meal and ordered one serving of turon, sweet plantain wrapped in an egg roll sheet sometimes with jackfruit and then fried, normally drizzled with honey or molasses in the end. Our turon was served in a cup of buko (coconut) ice cream with fresh shredded coconut in it. Oh my gosh. Of all the things we ate that night, that was the best! The ice cream tasted like it was homemade and the turon was on point. (Honestly, if you screw up turon get out of the kitchen. But that's me being biased because I love that stuff!) Despite it being $4 for one serving, Dad said he would come back to Rook just for that because it's the best we've had here in Indy and in Chicago.

If we were to take a moment to compare our main dishes to what we normally order in Chicago, Chicago would trump Indy--even the other Filipino restaurant in Indy would trump it. When it comes to turon with ice cream--well, Rook wins!

La Croix's coconut sparkling water
Now, if you guys were wondering why I never took a swig of my drink whilst eating my dish, well, let me start with this: WHO IS CRAZY ENOUGH TO DRINK THIS? WHAT ON EARTH? WHO'S IDEA WAS IT TO CONCOCT COCONUT SPARKLING WATER?

Yep. I wasn't a fan. I tried to drink the whole thing but I couldn't. I ended up drinking some of Mom's sweet tea by Honest.

That's it for now, guys!

Ah, before I forget--you can check out Rook's site to see their menu and learn about the shop at RookIndy.com. You can also follow them on Instagram to view drool-worthy photos! And, one last thing, if you check out their Twitter, you can find out they're daily specials.

I hoped you enjoyed this review. I am not in any way affiliated to any of the brands/restaurants I mentioned, nor was I asked by them to write this (if you couldn't tell already).

Have a great Friday!

xoxo

You can find Rook in Fletcher Place or, specifically, 719 Virginia Ave. Indianapolis.
07 November 2014

Last Friday, Nour and I started our weekend off with some volunteer work. We spent our evening passing out candy to children at a local community center because it was Halloween. I honestly do not celebrate Halloween, but I didn’t exactly read up on what I was doing so that was my fault. Whoops! Nonetheless, it was a fun experience. I mean, really, who doesn’t want to see kids in the most imaginative costumes ever? Or babies dressed up as adorable animals?

Even though I don’t celebrate Halloween, I wouldn’t mind buying a few costumes here and there for my baby (-ies since I want more than one. Heads up, future husband!). ^_^

Off topic—sort of.

Anyways. When we were almost halfway through volunteering (3 hours), we started talking about food…which brings us to my food review for Foodie Friday! We drove to Naisa Pan Asian Restaurant and then ended up running in the cold while there was a mix of rain and snow falling. (We found a parking space but not the restaurant!)

After successfully locating the place, we found ourselves in a warm, open space where the walls were covered in the traditional red for good fortune in Chinese culture. We sat down, and we ordered…

Location: Fountain Square
What I ate: Beef with Coconut & Curry with a dish of fried pork dumplings
What Nour ate: Veggie Fried Rice, Honey Sesame Shrimp, and an order of Tempura Shrimp
What I drank: Oolong tea!
What Nour drank: Traditionalist—Coke
Comments on the food: Hmmm… Being Asian and growing up eating Asian food at home and restaurants—honestly? This doesn’t really compare to what I could get at a seemingly dirty and run-down Chinese take-out restaurant. The food in my honest opinion is really made for the American-Chinese audience. I would come back, however, for their steamers because I saw a pair of ladies order them and they looked divine! They came in the traditional bamboo steamers that I am familiar with from dim-sum restaurants, so that’s a plus for me. I would have to go back to see if the steamer is worth it.... Also, another dish that would bring me back would be the dumplings. Just familiarity, I suppose, since you can get dumplings at any Chinese place.

As for Nour’s food—all of her food looked yummy. The fried rice is something that can be whipped up at home if I felt like it. (It’s a pretty standard dish…) Of the food I tried from hers, I really enjoyed the crispiness of her shrimp tempura! The wasabi mayo that came with it complemented it really well, and the wasabi wasn’t too overpowering.

Where: 1025 Virginia Ave, Indianapolis

Oh so warm oolong!

Think I can handle decorating in the kitchen?

Until next time!

Lovelies!

How are you? I thought I would start off my evening with a Flashback Friday...to YESTERDAY! Yes, today I will be covering yesterday's outfit of the day that transformed easily into an outfit for church.

Now, here's a little background about my style when it comes to dressing for church:

  1. If it's a Thursday, I want as much as possible that whatever I'm wearing in the day to be appropriate for when I go to church at night. It cuts down on the time I spend trying to decide on what to wear--especially since my classes finish during rush hour.
  2. I have a TON of blue and black in my closet, so don't be surprised if you see a lot of those two colours.
  3. I normally don't add accessories. As an organist I like to keep everything simple so nothing acciddentally hits a key. BUT...
  4. It's like I'm laughing at some secret joke.
  5. ...this is an exception.

So starting with my jumper/sweater (depends on where you're from)...it is a sheer, almost metallic-y silver one that was made by Avec. I covered up underneath with a pink cami, paired that with jeans and threw on my white slim Chucks [link to similar]. For a final touch, I added the black jewelled bow ring. Isn't it cute? It makes me think of that trick when you need to remember something. (Thankfully I didn't have to remember anything except for getting to class on time and how.) Anywho--I traversed around campus to my only morning class in this comfy outfit, however, during my morning class it turned cold and started raining so this outfit wasn't exactly ideal until the afternoon.

Ugh. Midwest. You gotta love her bi-polar weather.

NOT.

Never in a million years will I ever. I mean, it's so hard to dress for four seasons in one go! You have to have a pair of shorts with some leggings, a pair of rain boots with heavy duty socks, a tank top, an oversized sweater, a winter coat, umbrella, and a scarf and mittens. And a pair of flip flops or rollable flats tucked inside your backpack or purse--whatever floats your boat.

That may or may not be an exaggeration, but this is coming from 20 years of experience.

Just saying.

Anyways. Later on, when I was getting ready for church, I removed the jeans, added a black flare skirt (old) and added a sequined collar necklace in silver and black flats. I've had this necklace for a while and never did I think I would use it until last night. I didn't know what to pair it with in the past until yesterday! You guys have no idea how happy it made me last night when I saw that it looked perfect with the jumper. The last picture is only a scratch on the surface of my excitement.

It looks like a real collar but all of us know it isn't! ^_^
I hope you guys enjoyed my post! I've gotta study since I have a big day tomorrow with Nour and barely anytime to do any of this shiz on Sunday.

Ciao, bellas!

02 October 2014

Let me preface this post with this: Nour and I recently joined  The Betty Rocker's #Rocktober challenge and I started it yesterday.

Yesterday, after I finished a crummy maths quiz, I got into my car and drove to the park nearest my apartment and did a mix of walking, running, and jogging.

Don't let the map confuse you! I went up and down hills--oh, who am I kidding? (But I did, so yeah.) I need to get into the yellow zone more in the future. But, considering I haven't done a mile since June, I would have to say that I did pretty well for finishing it in 17 minutes. (I remember in June I was around 25-32 minutes. Yes, 32 minutes.)

After feeling successful about the 17 minute mark, I lingered in my car checking up on anything that I had missed on my phone before going home.Dear God, I was famished yesterday! Honestly, I have no idea what was going on with me. I woke up at 5am, had a bagel, ate some grapes at 6, and then a bowl of cereal at 7 before heading out the door.

I mean, really. I ate quite a bit.
Okay, quite a lot.

Anyways. When I got home, I opened up Bree's (aka The Betty Rocker) e-mail to get the workout and did it three times. HOLY CRAP. I am sore but not to the point I can't move. I'm just sore enough to know I did enough but could have gone a little further. The Alternating Squat Lunge move killed my inner thighs. Ugh. I can feel it whenever I move when sitting down or getting up.

But it hurts so good.

Hahahahaha!

Let's see how well I'll handle day 2!

xoxo SamiJoie

01 October 2014

Hello, lovelies!

So I just came back from Starbucks with a grande mocha (and when I say "I just came back from Starbucks" I mean I put my mocha in the microwave to stay warm, cleaned my room a bit, set out some clothes, and hopped into the shower before sitting down to write this and drink my mocha), and all I can say is thank God there is a Starbucks two seconds away from my house. It's walking distance, but I would not recommend doing that during what I consider the second rush hour here in Indy even if  it is a little over half a mile away by car.

Which, if you haven't noticed yet, is the time that I went. ^_^

Anyway. Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is playing in the background, and I have yet to consider when I'm going to eat dinner. Maybe soon. Maybe not. I ate a lot today...

My apologies! It has been a long two weeks as I have mentioned in my title because I went a majority of last week without my computer (wow, can we just hashtag that? #FirstWorldProblems). My baby was at the Windows store because the OS was hit pretty hard by a virus causing the OS to crash. They tried to recover my files, but that virus whatever took them down too replacing them with fake files. All of my videos that were edited are gone so bummer. No, really, bummer because I worked on those a good hour or two each. Aigoo.

That said, I have to re-do my videos for the Nashville trip. But that's okay because I think they were somewhat crappy...

I think. I probably should have backed those up to my external hard drive...

Hahaha!!

Yeah...

But, second chances, right?

Anyways, stayed tuned, guys! I've got a checklist for the month of October and I am going to COMPLETE this sucker! Boo-yah! Let's do it!

And at the very top of that list is #Rocktober with The Betty Rocker. I'm doing this with my loffly friend, Nour, and we are gonna make our fat cry! Gaiz, you should do it if you wanna tone up and/or lose weight. She has a FaceBook group set up for everyone subscribed to it--which, did I mention is free? Yes, it is so free! When you sign up for the 30 Day Challenge, you will get a workout each week--the video expires each week to ensure you follow through with it--with modifications and different time intervals based on which level of difficulty you are on. The video is great to follow especially when you have no idea how to perform a certain move. She provides a PDF file with all of the moves and modifications, so if you don't have access to high speed internet (or even a good connection at that) you can follow the PDF. On top of all of that, her site has other workouts to do (if the one provided for the week isn't enough for you or you're just that awesome!) as well as recipes so you can eat healthily for the next 30 days.

Everything is free, so how can you pass this up?

I've also done Blogilates in the past, but sometimes opening multiple videos can be a pain. Don't get me wrong or anything--I love Cassey and all, but I wanna change it up! What I love about Bree's plan (the Betty Rocker) is that we do one workout three times a week, three times a day. Very easy, especially for me who is trying to fit everything into a new schedule.

Well, that's all for now, loves! I'm at the end of my grand mocha and I've run out of things to say.

Stay tuned, bellas!

xoxo SamiJoie

PS: I wasn't asked to promote either of the online trainers--I just needed to publicly say this so that I can stay on track with it. Motivation is key and there are many ways of doing it!

Comment below if y'all are doing a challenge! Let's do it together!
06 September 2014

Hello, lovelies!

I know it's been a while since I last posted (why do I keep saying this???????), but I've been taking pics of my activities over the last two weeks for upcoming posts! I do realise I have yet to finish my series on the Nashville vacation, but, guys, I am so exhausted. I've been catching up on school work (I recently got my books and school started LAST week) and cleaning the apartment (I moved!) It's been hectic lately, so this starbucks is well deserved at this point because I did get lost in my own town after not driving in it for so long.

Anyways. I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm not dead and that things are still on their way! I haven't forgotten!!

See y'all soon!
SamiJoie

PS
Are y'all loving my pic? I got what my bestie Nour normally orders: grande mocha and petite French madeleines (but she switches it up with shortbread cookies every now and then). ^_^

20 August 2014

Hello, lovelies!!

In an earlier post (or was it my last one??), I remember mentioning that the gals and I planned a trip to Nashville. Well, we are here right now. We had some lovely adventures on our first day that I will blog to you about. Starting now.

Y'all know when you're heading south when you see billboards about Jesus and your salvation or impending damnation every half mile.

Maybe even less.

Comforting...
What you didn't know is that you would be seeing billboards of the world's largest underground zipline tours every half mile located in Louisville, Kentucky, usually paired with the salvation/damnation signs. TBH moment here: Whitney suggested ziplining during the planning process of our trip, but I was reluctant due to a fear of heights. So, what on earth made me suggest (me, yes, me, the person who was adamant to not do such an activity--my friends don't know that part...yet) we go ziplining in the world's largest underground ziplines? (Thinking back now, I think Whitney suggested it after seeing some of the boards, but no one heard...)

Oh, well, it was probably because of the one million billboards we saw advertising the Louisville Mega Cavern. I don't know why I went along with this or even opened my mouth about it or have any idea as to what happened to the rational part of my brain--even after reading the sign below. Like, who wants to zipline through hell? Okay, maybe not literally (although, can you imagine the lawsuits that would occur if that were the case?), but the setting was enough! RED lights everywhere and a won-der-ful tour guide with a deep demonic-sounding voice.

Welcome to hell...
So why did I not put together that if--if--we did fall, we would be falling 70+ feet to solid rock and not softer dirt were we to go ziplining above ground in trees?

Ugh.

Despite my banter about not being rational about the whole thing, I had an awesome time! No, seriously, I did! The sites were beautiful and breathtaking--in some cases, literally. I definitely had to employ some deep breathing methods on the longer lines. The two suspension bridges we had to cross weren't as bad as I thought. They were the ones, though, that you normally see Indiana Jones crossing--but they weren't as bad as zipping through the air. But, now that I think about it, what would I have done if a plank came loose? Uh...

Let's not think about it. Instead, let's take a look at how happy Whitney and Sarah looked after completing the course!

Don't they look happy? And adorable?

That's what I thought. ^_~

From Louisville, we drove straight to our chalet--um, well, we detoured at DQ where Nour had the cutest popcorn shrimp I have ever seen, and Whitney and Sarah had the most delicious and chocolate-y blizzards to date. And then we drove straight to the chalet.

Our drive is a story in itself best saved for later...and so it shall be saved...for later.

For now, check out the vlog! Link below.
